Shoulder Pain Q & A

What causes shoulder pain?

There are a few major kinds of causes of shoulder pain. They are:

  • Bursitis — excessive use of the shoulder leading to swelling and inflammation of the bursae, called bursitis
  • Tendinitis — inflammation of the tendon, which is a cord that connects muscle to bone
  • Impingement — occurs when the top of the shoulder blade puts pressure on the underlying tissues when the arm is lifted away from the body
  • Arthritis — can be related to everyday wear-and-tear, sports or work injuries, or inflammation of the joint lining
  • Fractures — a broken bone

What is the treatment for shoulder pain?

If you have shoulder pain, it’s essential to rest your shoulder as much as you can. You can apply ice to your shoulder for 15 minutes, 3-4 times a day, for 2-3 days to help manage pain. Taking over-the-counter pain medicine such as Motrin® or Tylenol® can also help. Return to your normal activities slowly and carefully.

Seek out a chiropractor if you’re experiencing shoulder pain. They can diagnose the cause of your shoulder pain and offer various treatment options and exercises to do. A chiropractor can order an imaging test, such as an X-ray if necessary.

When should I see a doctor for shoulder pain?

Sometimes, sudden left shoulder pain can signify a heart attack. If you experience sudden pressure or crushing pain in your shoulder that radiates to your jaw, arm, or neck, or if you have shortness of breath, call 911 right away.

If you’ve recently had a severe injury, you’ll want to contact your health care provider. Some symptoms you’ll want to alert them about include:

  • Shoulder pain accompanied by fever or chills
  • Red or blue color to the skin on the shoulder
  • Trouble moving the shoulder
  • Swelling of the shoulder
  • Pain for more than two weeks, even after home treatment
