Neuropathy Q & A

What is neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition of your peripheral nerves. These are the nerves that aren’t part of your spinal cord and brain but branch out from your spine to all other parts of your body. If you have neuropathy, it means one or more of these nerves aren’t working properly.

Symptoms of neuropathy include:

  • Chronic pain
  • Numbness
  • Weakness
  • Tingling, prickling, or burning sensations
  • Muscle spasms
  • Loss of function
  • Balance problems

Depending on the nerves involved, you may have one or many of these symptoms.

What causes neuropathy?

Numerous things can cause neuropathy. One of the most common is diabetes, a complication of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. This condition typically affects the lower legs and feet when high blood sugar levels damage the nerves.

The many other causes of neuropathy include:

  • Connective tissue disorders
  • Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Postherpetic neuralgia from shingles
  • Epstein-Barr virus
  • Lyme disease
  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease
  • Bone marrow disorders
  • Kidney and liver disease
  • Exposure to poisons
  • Vitamin B and E deficiencies

Another leading cause of neuropathy is injured or compressed nerves. These nerves might come under pressure from a thickened ligament, a tumor, a bone spur, or inflamed tissues.

Common forms of neuropathy are sciatica and carpal tunnel syndrome. Sciatica is a result of pressure on the sciatic nerve in your lower back and leg. Carpal tunnel syndrome  is a result of pressure on the median nerve in your wrist.  Sometimes neuropathy is idiopathic, meaning there’s no clear cause.

How is neuropathy treated?

If there’s a recognizable cause for your neuropathy, like diabetes, it’s important to manage your condition effectively to reduce the risk of neuropathy. Joint Effort Chiropractic can also help by using noninvasive treatments that minimize stress on your joints, spine, and soft tissues.

It’s often problems with misaligned bones and inflamed connective tissues that cause neuropathy. By resolving these issues, the Joint Effort Chiropractic team reduces the inflammation and swelling that irritates the nerves and leads to neuropathy.

Chiropractic care also encourages healing, which helps reduce pain.

Another treatment that can help with neuropathy is Matrix stimulation therapy, which stimulates the peripheral nerves, blocks pain, and improves circulation.
